Port Huron Man Avoids Prison After Failing To Register As A Sex Offender

Apr 27, 2016, by Maurice Davis in Case Results, Criminal Defense, Sex Crimes

Michigan criminal defense attorney Maurice Davis knows too well that despite the best of intentions, the mistakes in someone’s past can haunt them for years. Recently, he aided a man in Port Huron, MI, when he moved to the area to care for his elderly mother after his father passed away, but neglected to update his registration as a sex offender. Although his previous conviction occurred several years ago, this lapse in judgment now placed the man in a situation, where he faced a new felony conviction for failing to register as a sex offender and a lengthy prison sentence. Overwhelmed by this grim state of affairs, the man knew that he needed a skilled lawyer and contacted Davis Law Group.

After a consultation, attorney Maurice Davis saw that his client had no intention of hiding from his obligation to register; however, the man was motivated out of concern for his ailing mother. Attorney Davis negotiated with the prosecutor and ultimately achieved a reduction from the felony charge to a misdemeanor level offense. Removing the fear of a felony conviction effectively allowed his client to be placed on probation instead of serving substantial time in prison. The client was relieved upon hearing this result, has since registered properly and is able to care for his mother without fear of punitive action.

The outcome of an individual case depends on a variety of factors unique to that case. Case results do not guarantee or predict a similar result in any similar or future case.
